Bavnytsia (clothes)

Bavnytsia (from Ukrainian cotton) is a women's headdress, characteristic of the Yavorivskyi district of Lviv region, which is a rectangular piece of cloth (approximately 30 by 60 cm in size) embroidered or woven along the horizontal edges with torokas.

Description

The unornamented middle of the bavnytsia is wrapped in folds under the embroidered stripes and sewn or tied with ribbons. This creates a solid frame, like a kibalka or a soft cap, on which a scarf is tied.

K. I. Mateyko believes that bavnytsias come from namitka, while H. G. Stelmashchuk considers them to be genetically related to girls' crown-like headdresses.

Bavnytsia stayed in use until the 1930s — longer than kybalka and ochepok in this area.

Bavnytsia spoke about the social status of a woman. Wealthy ladies dressed in richly decorated cotton along with an expensive scarf, young women preferred red, while widows preferred blue. The bodices of older women had a strip of unembroidered cloth.

Bavnychka embroidery

A set of techniques was used to embroider cotton balls, which was called "balloon embroidery". This is a set of techniques, including smooth, cross, half-cross, braid, and comb.

The pattern of each bauble consists of small mono-colored strips, made by the listed techniques, in the middle between which is a strip of small geometric shapes of different colors. The main color is red. Black, blue, green, white, yellow are also added.

The horizontal stripes had their own names: "furs" consisted of oblique stitches intersecting at the edge, "pigtails" — of oblique stitches intertwined in the center, "teeth" were a straight line with teeth, "twigs" — separate simple strips of yellow, green, blue colors

Cotton balls are always finished with 1–1.5 cm high red woolen torokas.
