Church of the holy apostle and evangelist John the Theologian

The refectory church of the holy apostle and evangelist John the Theologian is the refectory church of the Mykhailivskyi Zolotoverkhi monastery. Built in honor of John the Theologian.

History

It was built during the time of hegumen Ioanikiy Senyutovych in 1713-1715. It was built from the bricks of the Simeon Church, which was located in Kudryavka and burned down in 1676. In 1827, the Tabernacle Church of John the Theologian was thoroughly renovated, and in 1837, the interior of the church was decorated with paintings. In 1894, the bathhouse was gilded.

The refectory church was badly damaged in 1904 during a great fire.

In 1922, it was transformed into a student dining hall, which is why it was preserved and was not destroyed by the Bolsheviks like other buildings of the ensemble of the Mykhailo Golden-Top Monastery.

Table Church of St. app. and the evangelist John the Theologian becomes the first restored building — a landmark of the Mykhailo Golden-Top Monastery. It was also one of the first churches in Kyiv, after it was handed over to the Church during the perestroika in 1990, where services were conducted in the Ukrainian language.

Since 1991, it has been the cathedral of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, and since June 1992 it belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate.

With the opening in 1992 in the walls of the destroyed St. Michael's Monastery of the Kyiv Theological Academy and Seminary, the refectory church of St. app. and Evangelist John the Theologian becomes the academic temple of the Kyiv Orthodox Theological Academy and Seminary. Here, all the celebratory services related to the life of the seminary take place, young priests undergo priestly and deacon practice, and the academic choir sings. The temple has ancient whitewashed paintings. It is located on the territory of Mykhailo Zolotoverkhi monastery.

During the Revolution of Dignity, there was an improvised hospital in the temple where the wounded were treated.

Architecture

Like the similar refectory churches of Vydubytskyi in Kyiv, Troitskyi in Chernihiv and Gustynskyi monasteries, it is one-story, in the form of an elongated rectangle with a narrow church in the east. Church of St. app. St. John the Baptist is a one-story, two-part building with an octagonal pediment topped with a low helmeted bathhouse, which was covered with shingles after the restoration. The facades are decorated with pilasters and window openings, some are built and become niches. The church was built in the regional forms of Ukrainian Baroque.
