Church of the Holy Intercession in Podilsk

The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God is an active brick church in Kyiv on Podil, an architectural monument of the 18th century. The Parish of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God in Kyiv belongs to the Kyiv Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

Location

It is located on the territory of the manor, bounded from the east by Pokrovska Street, from the south by Akademik Zelinskyi Lane, and from the west by Borychiv Tik Street.

History

It was built at the expense of the Greek merchant Mykola Tarnaviot in 1685 on the site of the Armenian Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, which burned down in 1651.

During 1766-1772, Ivan Hryhorovych-Barsky built a modern building in its place - a two-story brick church in the form of a trikonch, crowned with three domes.

In 1811, there was a fire, after which the shape of the domes was changed, and the stucco decoration of the facades was also lost.

In 1824, a warm church of St. Ivan the Warrior was added from the west.

The free-standing bell tower was built in 1798-1799. Its second floor, originally wooden, burned down in 1811, in 1831 it was made of brick.

In the 1920s, the church belonged to the followers of the True Orthodox Church.

In the early 1930s, the church was closed by the Soviet authorities.

In 1941, during the German occupation, services in the church were resumed.

The church was restored in 1953-1954. It was closed again in 1958.

In 1971, the bell tower was restored.

On April 15, 1990, the clergy of the UAPC held an Easter service in the church.

In 1991, the church was handed over to the UAOC, and in fact became a cathedral. Patriarchs Mstislav (Skrypnyk) and Volodymyr (Romanyuk) conducted services in the church.

Architecture

The architectural ensemble of the Intercession Church consists of:
  • Intercession Church (XVIII century)
  • A two-story extension, equipped with the western facade at the beginning of the 19th century.
  • Belfry (second half of the 18th century)
From the west and partly from the north, the yard is surrounded by a brick fence with a gate, from the north and from the east along Pokrovska Street - metal bars on an openwork brick parapet wall. In the center is a brick arcade with gates and gates.

According to its composition, the church belongs to the Ukrainian three-storied three-timbered churches. The building was erected in 1766-1772 in the Ukrainian Baroque style by the famous architect Ivan Hryhorovych-Barsky.

Confessional paintings, metric books and clerical information of the church (from 1737 to 1918) are stored in the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine, Kyiv.
