Sardak, serdak (from Turk. şirdag, şerdak — "type of clothing") is an upper short dress with sleeves, which was common in the western regions of Ukraine, including representatives of the Hutsul ethnographic group of Ukrainians.
The sardak was worn over the keptar unfastened or vice versa.
Description
They sewed sardaks from dark gray, black cloth. It was decorated with embroidery, lacing, tassels and others.
The cut of the sardak was extremely simple. They took two pieces of cloth. One piece remained whole, and the other (before) was cut into two fields (parts). The sardak was sewn straight, not to the waist and without whiskers, and large wedges were sewn on the sides at the bottom. The sleeves were also straight cut and notched at the bottom.
Such sardaks were worn in the mountains, on Pidhirets, on Zadnistova. Hearts were black or white and embroidered with twisted laces. In the mountains, the sardaks were short, and the closer to the valley, the longer the sardak became. Above the Dniester, the sardaks were mid-shin length. In the Stanislavsky district, near Kalush and Lystia, white sardaks of a special cut, with a pointed collar and decorated with paneling, were worn.
